When countries are not signatories to The La Hague Convention documents cannot be Apostilled but must be Authenticated and subsequently be certified by their local Embassy.

The normal process as for Apostille will be followed but a Authentication certificate will be issued instead of a Apostille. The documents look the same and are affixed to the document to be Authenticated in the same way.

Irrespective of the origin and type of document the documents has to be presented to DIRCO for Authentication and then only presented to the relevant Embassy.

The Embassy legalises the documents by affixing a stamp or seal. There is always a fe charged by the embassy which can differ from R 15 to R 1000 per document.

This process is only applicable when the target country are not signaturies tom the La Hague Convention for example:

 • UAE
